We have photographed a lot of hawks in the last couple of years. However, most times red-tailed hawks are very wary of people and when we stop the car, they take off.... 'away from us'. There has been the odd time when they wouldn't take off for a few minutes, or would take off opposite to us. When we seen this juvenile red-tailed on the top of the tree, we stopped, fully expecting him to fly away. Trying to react to his take off as he was moving his feet on the branch, I was expecting him to take off away from us (to his right) and all I would get is 'butt' shots.....lol. To our surprise, he took off directly forward, but instead of abruptly turning to his right and going away from us, he turned slightly to his left to come towards us and flew by right in front as we stood there. He turned his head briefly as he was going by to look at us, and then continued on his way.
It isn't that often we get a hawk coming towards us and are honored he decided to change the pace....this time :)
