Pictures of the Day - "Pileated Woodpecker Morning" - April 24, 2017
A few days ago, I was walking in our local park and heard something, then turned to see what it was. Over popped this Pileated Woodpecker trying to get it's breakfast. I got a little closer and took some photos, then it flew over a little closer but to my right in behind some other trees. So I carefully and slowly walked over towards where it landed. There was a bush in front of me, so I knelt down behind it and got a little closer. It was quite dark that morning with a bit of sun trying to get through the thick branches and trees and behind the woodpecker, which meant the bird was in shadow. So I raised my ISO in camera and started taking pictures. The woodpecker wasn't paying much attention to me as I clicked the shutter. The last 2 photos I had to back up a bit in order to keep the woodpecker in my frame....lol. After what seemed like quite a few minutes, it flew off to another tree, and I continued on my path to discover what else was around :) Taken with Canon 7D Mk ll & Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM @400mm. Shot settings: 1/2000, ISO 6400, f5.6, with + 2/3 exposure compensation.
